Vandra Rugs was founded by Cia Attling, Larissa Bodén and Marie Wallenberg Olsson in 2006.  We offer rugs that combine design and handicraft knowledge.

All rugs are woven by hand either with a rag-rug technique or from yarn exclusively using the highest quality natural materials cotton, wool-felt, wool-yarn and linen.

Vandra Rugs originates from the classic textile company EMTE Textil. EMTE Textil had a close relationship with the well-known design house Svenskt Tenn. EMTE Textil was founded in the 1940s by Professor Edna Martin and Mrs Marit Thorén. With the help of a wide network of weavers from all around Sweden, they designed and produced textiles and hand-woven rugs. Mrs Barbro Thessing took over the company in the 1980s and developed the weaving studio and production. 

Today we work with the entire chain, from dyeing the cotton fabric to design and production. When it comes to finding original solutions and realizing ideas, the possibilities are almost endless.

Since 2007 the weaving atelier is located in southern Ukraine, offering work opportunities to women in this poor, rural area. Old hand looms were bought and shipped down. Local women were recruited and trained by experienced Swedish weavers to gain in-depth knowledge. Weaving courses and workshops are held regularly for continuous development. 

The weavers are often the main breadwinners of their household, enabling them to send their children to universities, pay for medical treatments and day to day life. In addition to empowering the women by offering them a chance to learn a trade/craft, working for a company exporting to the west gives them access and exposure to new cultures. Currently some 35 weavers are involved in production and the atelier has become one of the regions most important exporters to the west.
